Sign ordinance committee

Subject: Sign Ordinance Meeting - Monday 11/20

I wanted to update you on the WT Committee meeting last night. The sign ordinance was discussed as advertised. Here's what we can expect:

Good News! the proposed 'new' ordinance will be scrapped. There appears to be committee consensus that it does not make sense to 're-invent - the - wheel' with a whole new ordinance so the direction will be focused on the existing ordinance, including a review of, and some modifications. The stated process will begin in Dec, the WT Committee will publish the proposed changes and provide them to the business community, schedule more discussion, and seek input from the community.

I had the opportunity to address the WT Committee on behalf of the LVVA and expressed our collective sigh of relief that wholesale changes were not being considered, and welcomed the opportunity to work with the Committee on proposed changes. My impression is that they will listen to us in December.

Other community members addressing the committee were Carol Brackenridge of the Historical/Preservation Committee, reminding the Committee that all businesses in the Historic District already seek their approval for signage, and the process works. No need for change there.

Four Realtors ( including myself ) addressed the committee on the use of temporary OPEN HOUSE signs. It appears the committee has some safety issues involving "view obstruction" ie, balloons, and signs in the "right -of -way impeding turns. The Committee does however seem open to allowing the use of Open House signs under some new conditions, size, and placement.

Enforcement of the sign ordinance will be part of the process as well. As stated above, the 'review' will include the language used to spell out the ordinance, with the intent being 'uniform' and 'enforceable'. Therefore it will be worth monitoring this process going forward, and our participation in the process will be key. Voting on the proposed changes will be Jan '07, with the critical part happening in Dec.

Hope this helps!.....Kevin

On August 29, 2006, the sign ordinance committee was formed and is comprised of the following volunteers:

We encourage all members to review the current ordinance and the proposed amendment, and please forward your concerns to anyone on the committee. This will help to ensure that we are addressing the appropriate issues with the Township Committee. Please let us know how you feel as soon as you can. The committee will be meeting again the first week of September. If you need another copy, click on the links above and download the ordinances into your word processor to print, or stop by PNC where Pam has hard copies available.
